The Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) recently approved Sony?s plan to invest Bt2.6 billion in its production plant expansion project with an aim to increase production capacity for digital cameras, parts and lenses.
Dr. Atchaka Sibunruang, Secretary General of Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), said, ?Sony?s investment in Thailand is very much welcome. It is also good evidence showing that foreign investors? confidence in Thailand remains strong.
Under the plan, Sony will expand its existing production facility in Ayutthaya province to accommodate more production capacity of digital cameras, camera parts and lenses. Once the construction is completed, the extension project will allow Sony to produce 2.1 million digital cameras, 2.73 million lenses, and 2.2 million parts per year at its plant in Ban Wa Industrial Estate, Ayutthaya. The project will use local content worth over Bt2.41 billion per annum and create 1,029 more jobs for locals.
Most of the products to be manufactured under this project will be exported mainly to Sony EMCS Tokai TEC Kodah Plant, a sales representative of Sony Group. The rest will be sold to Sony Thai, the Thai distributor of Sony in Thailand.
In addition to Thailand, Sony also has digital camera and camera parts production in China and Malaysia.
?The company is confident in Thailand long-term investment potential, reasonable costs and skilled labour as well as the country?s healthy economic fundamentals, support from the government and market growth,? said Dr. Sibunruang.
